K-12 Schools in Texas can prepare for Alyssa’s Law by applying for Silent Panic Alert Technology (SPAT) grant funding today.

What is Alyssa’s Law?

Alyssa’s Law is a proposed bill in the state of Texas that aims to require all public schools in the state to install panic alarms that can be activated in case of a school shooting or other emergency. The law is named after Alyssa Alhadeff, a 14-year-old student who was killed in the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida in 2018. Alyssa’s law has been passed in Florida, New York, and New Jersey.

A panic alarm system is designed to alert authorities and first responders to an emergency on school grounds, allowing them to respond as quickly as possible to prevent further loss of life.

How does Alyssa’s Law work in Texas?

In 2022, Alyssa’s Law was introduced in the Texas legislature by State Representative Shawn Thierry. The proposed law would require all public schools in Texas to install panic alarms in classrooms and other areas of the school and provide staff training on how to use them.

The idea behind Alyssa’s Law is that by providing a quick and easy way for students and staff to alert authorities to an emergency, response times can be dramatically shortened, potentially saving lives.

How Your School Can Prepare for Alyssa’s Law

In response to Alyssa’s law, the Silent Panic Alert Technology (SPAT) Grant was created to provide financial assistance to Texas K-12 schools to help purchase and install silent panic button systems.

Schools can apply for the SPAT Grant through the Texas Education Agency (TEA). Wahsega created this 4-Step-Guide to help Texas schools apply for a SPAT Grant.

The SPAT Grant is a valuable opportunity for Texas schools to improve their safety and security by installing silent panic buttons. By following this 4-step guide, schools can ensure that they are well-prepared to apply for the grant and take advantage of this important resource.
